Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, has hinted that the show's second season will be even more intense than the first.
In an interview with Variety, the show's creator indicated that the second season will explore whether humanity can conquer the world as a united front."Humanity will be put to the test once more through those games," he stated.
"I want to explore the issue, 'Is true human solidarity possible?" he added.
Dong-hyuk also mentioned that the separation between players was to blame for the high number of deaths in season one.
"I agree that there was a possibility that we could have seen more winners if they were capable of communicating to one another, of cooperating with one another," he continued.
Season 2 of Squid Game will premiere on Netflix in 2023 or 2024. He also stated that he has three pages of ideas for season two and that he is in talks with Netflix concerning the show's future.
Squid Game's first season, which premiered in 2021, followed a group of 100 people as they attempted to pay off their debts by playing childish games with a violent edge. The more people who died, the more money they'd be able to win.
Hwang Dong-hyuk announced in April that season two of the critically praised series would return with two actors from the previous season.
"Gi-hun for sure," he said. "He'll be back," he added, "and I believe the Front Man will be returning as well."
In season two of the dystopian drama, Lee Byung-hun, who played Squid Game overseer Hwang In-ho of 456 participants, is scheduled to return.
Squid Game topped the charts in 94 countries in its inaugural season, averaging 142 million viewers in four weeks.
