ASUU: We are not beggars, ASUUNGN tells FG

We’re not beggars, hunger won’t force us to resume. ASUUNGN tells FG

We aren't beggars, and hunger won't make us return. ASUUNGN informs FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has stated that its members are not beggars, and that the government's failure to pay their salaries will not force them to end their strike.

The union's leadership also praised the members for being loyal to the union despite the hardships faced by their families as a result of the FG's No-Work-No-Pay policy.

Following the government's inability to accept some of the union's pressing requests, the union declared a one-month warning strike on February 14, 2022, followed by another eight-week walkout before launching its indefinite strike. The Federal Government imposed No-Work-No-Pay as a result of the ongoing strike.

The instruction was issued in accordance with Section 43 of the Labour Law, according to Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige. Despite the fact that several of the union's demands are still being worked out, ASUU NGN President Prof Emmanuel Osodeke voiced optimism that the union was on the verge of triumph.

Our members are especially commended for being loyal to the union despite the hardships they have faced.

He did say, that

The FG was obliged to negotiate because of the union's resolve. As the struggle continues, our members are congratulated for their dedication and tenacity in the patriotic struggle for the survival of our country's university system, he added. Our unwavering resolve has compelled the government to take a seat down and bargain with us. We've met with the Federal Government's staff five times and the Minister of Education twice.

They have stated unequivocally that we are not beggars, and that hunger is an ineffective tool for breaking our determination.

NITDA (National Information Technology Development Agency) has tested UTAS and UPS thus far, and IPPIS will be tested next week. The shenanigans of some government officials in this regard haven't discouraged us.The renegotiation of the ASUU-FGN agreement from 2009 is going well and has reached a critical stage. We must, however, remain concentrated till the finish of this battle. For the third time, UTAS (University Transparency and Accountability Solution) has been put to the test.
